Bathymetric Survey

ROV Latis is a multi-mode vehicle equipped with a high reolustion multibeam sonar, transmitting at 400kHz, and capable of carrying out fast bathymetric seabed surveys through the implementation of automatic waypoint following.

Latis is equipped with a RESON mutibeam sonar which operates on the transmission and interpretation of sound wave returns (based on time coefficients) from the seafloor..

The multibeam is integrated onboard Latis with numerous other sensors such as fibre Gyros and sound velocity probes to give an accurate interpretation of depth. This data is in turn integrated with additional sensors such as an inertial navigation system and a doppler velocity log and used to associate each depth return to a GPS location. This data is then collected to form a map (bathymetic) of the seafloor.

This state-of-the-art navigation hardware and control algorithms can be used to produce cm-resolution scale datasets of a specific area and can be used to survey shipwreck sites, groundings and carry out bathymetric searches. Each of these capabilities will be utilised throughout the course of the exercise.

Latis has been used previously to survey historical archaelogically important shipwrecks sites around the coast of Ireland such as the La Surveillante, UC42, S.S. Castro, S.S Empire Heritage and S.S. Empress of Britain. Additional surveys involving subsea cables  and ocean energy device locations have also been completed.




The Multibeam sonar array can also be configured as a forward looking sonar, munted at ninety degrees to the seabed. Although this data is not fully GPS referenced, it can be used to form a synthetic map of the topography forward of the ROV.

Distances of up to 120 metres can be mapped quite easily with a high degree of accuracy, allowing completion of large area surveys in minimal times.
